Using Dexpan to Break Underwater Rock

Using Dexpan to Break Underwater Rock

PROJECT
Remove a large partially submerged boulder to gain another docking spot for a boat.

LOCATION
Ontario Cottage Country.

CHALLENGES
1.   Need to break a large boulder into manageable sizes for removal.
2.  Boulder partially submerged underwater.
3.  Remote location and cost prevented using heavier equipment.
4.  A cabin 70 feet away and sensitive waterway meant explosives, blasting were not an option.

SOLUTION
1.   Dexpan non-explosive demolition grout Type 2.
2.  Used golf club protector tubes to fill holes underwater and prevent Dexpan mixture from being diluted by lake water.
3.  Created a tight seal with drilled holes then suctioned water out with Shop Vac.
4.  Patience:  waiting overnight gave Dexpan time to work to fuller effect.

PROJECT DETAILS
1.   1 1/2" Diameter holes drilled to desired finished depth (not all the way through the boulder)
2.  Holes spaced 8" apart
3.  Water temperature was 15 C, air was 20 C, but overnight (and rock temperature) was probably around 15 C.
4.  Dexpan Type 2.
5.  1 3/8" golf club protective tubes to protect from water
